Mushroom coffee vs. regular coffee: what's actually different?
Mushroom coffee is regular coffee with powdered mushrooms blended in. WakersHAPPYCoffee® keeps real French roast coffee and adds chaga, cordyceps and shiitake plus nine more superfoods. Here's how it compares to a regular cup — using the numbers on our label, not marketing.
- ~165 mg caffeine
- 20 calories
- ~2 g net carbs
- 12 superfoods

Caffeine
A typical 8 oz cup of brewed coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine (USDA). One scoop of WakersHAPPYCoffee® has about 165 mg — 60 mg from French roast coffee plus 105 mg of added caffeine.
Some mushroom coffees are sold as low-caffeine. Ours isn't — it's a strong cup. The FDA has cited 400 mg a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects for healthy adults, so count all your coffee, tea and energy drinks.
Ingredients
Regular coffee is just roasted coffee beans and water. Mushroom coffee adds mushroom powders or extracts, and some blends add other botanicals too.
WakersHAPPYCoffee® contains 12 superfoods: chaga, cordyceps, shiitake, green tea, ginseng, cinnamon, cocoa, ginger, turmeric, green coffee, matcha and maca root. They're combined in a 5.6 g proprietary blend, listed on the label in order of weight.
Taste
Regular coffee tastes like its roast. Mushroom coffee ranges from earthy to chocolatey depending on the blend. Ours uses cocoa and cinnamon, so it tastes like a smooth mocha — see our guide to what mushroom coffee tastes like.
Calories, carbs and sugar
Black coffee has almost no calories. A scoop of WakersHAPPYCoffee® has 20 calories and 7 g of carbohydrate, 5 g of which is fiber — about 2 g net carbs — and no sugar. The bigger difference usually comes from what you add: a sweetened coffee-shop mocha can have far more sugar than anything in this cup.
Convenience and cost
Regular coffee needs a brewer, pods or a coffee shop. Ours is instant: one scoop and hot water. With our bundles it works out to as little as $1.39 a cup, tax and shipping included.
Mushroom coffee side effects to know about
- Caffeine: at about 165 mg a scoop, too much can cause jitters, trouble sleeping, a fast heartbeat or an upset stomach. Start with one cup a day.
- Fiber: each scoop has 5 g of soluble corn fiber. If you're not used to fiber, start slowly and drink water.
- Mushroom allergies: skip mushroom coffee if you're allergic to mushrooms.
- If you are pregnant, nursing, sensitive to caffeine, allergic to mushrooms, taking medication or managing a medical condition, check with your healthcare provider before use.

Frequently asked questions
- Is mushroom coffee healthier than regular coffee?
- We can't promise that. It's a different cup: real coffee plus 12 superfoods, with no sugar. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. If you are pregnant, nursing, sensitive to caffeine, allergic to mushrooms, taking medication or managing a medical condition, check with your healthcare provider before use.
- Does mushroom coffee have less caffeine than regular coffee?
- Some brands do. Ours has more: about 165 mg per scoop compared with roughly 95 mg in a typical 8 oz cup of brewed coffee.
- Can I switch from regular coffee to mushroom coffee?
- Yes. Because ours has real coffee and plenty of caffeine, most people simply replace their usual cup. Keep track of your total caffeine for the day.
- Does mushroom coffee taste like regular coffee?
- Ours tastes like a smooth mocha — coffee first, with cocoa and cinnamon. It doesn't taste like mushrooms.
